Characteristics of conscious leadership

Conscious leadership is the type of leadership where the leaders understand the importance of the business succeeding. These type of leaders are always aware that the business should survive so that future generations benefit as well. Conscious leadership also encourages people in the organization to work better and enjoy their working space. This is a spirit that only the leader can instill in his people. A conscious leader is always foresighted. They will always look at the future prospects of the business. They will want to evaluate whether their input in the company is contributing to the company’s success (Capital, 2016). And finally, these leaders are always driven to motivate their employees in order to achieve the company, career and individual goals together. This type of leadership goes well with the path-goal theory. This is the type where the leader guides the employees through the processes necessary to attain the company goals (Wolinski, 2010). This is by ensuring that anything standing in the way of the employee achieving the goals is eliminated. There is a trait theory of leadership whereby, the leader has inborn abilities to head an organization. These are traits like emotional intelligence, the ability to delegate duties respectfully and the ability to interact with all kinds of people among other qualities. In the conscious leadership situation, the leader can have all the above qualities guided by being aware of self at all times.

Self-awareness, Self-concept and Emotional Intelligence

Self-awareness in conscious leadership is the best way to ensure that the company projects are successful. This means that the leader has to be critical and true to themselves. This is the process where a leader must know all the negative traits they possess, that is; communication skills, poor management of time or even how they motivate the other employees in the company (Ellis, 2015). This will enable the leader to enhance the company’s working conditions for employees and performance over time. Emotional intelligence in leadership is very important. This is the ability to understand different personality types by the types of emotions they experience. This is the best way of ensuring that at no pint will an employee feel misunderstood or pushed to do things they feel are inappropriate. An emotionally intelligent leader always gets along with all the company employees without a problem. This is also a trait that enables a leader to correct and guide employees well based on their personality types. Self-concept is also an important factor in leadership. Self-concept allows an individual to own their selves and remain independent (Ellis, 2015). This is to ensure that even when there is a situation that will compromise the personal values of the leader, they may take the high road and resign. This is where the self-concept is guaranteed to sustain the image of the leader. Leaders that are known to be virtuous have a strong sense of self-concept.

The test reveals that my leadership skills are good. However, the test also revealed that my personality could be my undoing in a leadership position. I am not very social which could make it hard for me to interact with other employees effectively. This is a challenge that I will need to work on to ensure that I can attain the levels of a conscious leader. Being a conscious leader can make a company succeed and remain in operation due to the policies developed for operations. The results automatically bring me to the realization that in order to be a leader, being emotionally intelligent is not enough when the social skills are not there. The test helped me in being more self-aware. It is also the reason why I will strive to learn more about how to effectively communicate to the employees while interacting. This will make it easy to ensure that the employees are motivated. As a leader, the motivation styles will also be practiced for the employees to feel that they own the success of the company. In the long run, the test will have made me a better prospective leader compared to me before taking the test.

Results of Self-Assessment

After taking the assessment tests, leadership is not as complicated as I thought it to be previously. The concept of leadership is clearer now that the self-assessment has enhanced my view of values, attitudes and approach towards new tasks. This means that I can now realize when I have lost my values in the process of exercising leadership. Personal values and attitudes are often the strongest traits that an individual can have when in a leadership position. My approach to new tasks is likely to be more informed. My approach is going to be positive, solution oriented. I will most likely ensure that each time I get a new task, I can easily understand what the task needs and explain the same to the other employees. This is a leadership approach that ensures things get done and at the same time, the people involved in the process feel they have been acknowledged. As a leader, I would develop the conscious organizational culture (Renesch, 2012). This would be benefit the people within the organization. They would be in a position to monitor the operations and ensure any vice cropping up in the organization is immediately curbed. For a leader practicing conscious leadership, it is important for the organization to also have a conscious organizational culture.

Behavior Improvement after Self-assessment

Behavior on an individual level has improved after the self-assessment test. This is because now I see the benefits of personal time management. I strive to complete my tasks faster every day and being efficient while at it. The tests have proven necessary in ensuring that I can now act consciously on all decisions I have to make at individual levels. In a group setting, I am going to be a better team player even when am not in charge of accomplishing a task. This means that as an individual, I can easily fit into a group of people and work together to achieve a common goal. My input will always be in the form of a suggestion rather than as a form of finality. This is because suggestions represent the willingness of an individual to accept other ideas. In an organization, being self-aware makes it easy for me to accept guidance from the leaders above and understand how to deal with them appropriately. The ability to have leadership skills and agree to work under another leader is often a sign of a progressive leader. This will be further manifested in my ability to respect and abide by the leaders direction. At the same time, as a subordinate employee in an organization, I can contribute to the development of better leadership styles where need be.
