The Purity Pledge

This documentary, The Purity Pledge and America’s Modern Virginity Movement, revolves around the annual “Purity Ball” which fathers attend with their children. The main focus, however, is on fathers and their daughters as these are considered the founders of the Purity Ball Movement. Moreover, the documentary seems to champion the opinion that the relationship between parents and their daughters determines how girls view themselves and how they should react towards men who enter and exit her life as she grows older and progresses towards marriage.

During the attendance of such balls, women are fed with a doctrine that they need to remain faithful to their fathers. The girls also show a tendency to remain dependent on their fathers for advice, up to the point of when they will break their virginities. The video suggests that breaking virginity is a sign of weakness for a girl and that girls become impure once they break their virginity before marriage.

The video shows a very traditional system that is still used by Americans today. Girls have become so dependent of their fathers that they seem to have no role to play in determining the direction of their own lives. The aspect of keeping virginity as a gift is highly emphasized for girls and disregarded for women.

The movie also fails in another aspect. It disregards all the girls who have no father figures in their lives and must learn how to forge their way through life. This movement does not give these girls a chance and assumes that they are marked for failure in the end.

In conclusion, the video The Purity Pledge and America’s Modern Virginity Movement presents the idea of a movement that seeks to map the future of young girls by developing a strong relationship between them and their fathers. The movement argues that women should keep their virginity until married or will from then on be regarded impure. The movement however disregards the women who have no father figures or whose parents are too busy to afford time to be with them.
