PERSONAL STATEMENT
My father once told me, “You are your only obstacle. If you conquer yourself, nothing else will stop you from achieving your goals.” This made me believe in myself and molded me to an ambitious man with big dreams waiting to be accomplished. I have a special family that loves, appreciates and considers me unique. Yet in the entire family, no one has graduated in the medical field. My joining medical school will not only be a chance for me to achieve my dreams but also a way of being a role model for all those children in my family who have not mapped out their careers.
I made a principled decision to become a dentist when I was in my second year of high school. At this point, I got to meet one dentist who had graduated from Virginia Common Wealth University. He made me understand so much about dentistry that I made my decision forthwith and have stood by it since then. First, while I had thought that being a dentist would take away my social skills from me, I realized that he was a very social person with those outside his place of work. Second, I felt drawn to him since he was interested with the same sports as I was. He also advised me to select UMKC as my dental school on the basis of the quality of education offered. Since then, I have worked with several practitioners as an assistant and every time I do, I get surer about my decision.
I have many characteristics that make me fir in this career. First, I am one person who usually feels rewarded by helping other people. Joining the medical field will give me a chance to help other people alleviate their pains and protect their teeth. This makes me a suitable candidate rather than those who do it simply for the money.
I also have a very confident and reassuring demeanor. I have come to discover that many patients often come into dentists’ rooms feeling scared. It is my role to help them feel comfortable, safe and appreciated. This attribute will also enable me to be more social with my patients hence making patients more comfortable sharing their problems with me.
Third, it is in my nature to follow instructions to the letter. This will help me to be better able to resolve issues that arise during my duties by following rules, regulations, procedures and practices. This way, I am able to keep off from errors that may be caused by negligence.
Finally, I am a good educator. Proper patient care often involves the collaboration of both patients and physicians. Being able to educate patients about their problems will enable me to be viewed by patients as a better medical practitioner. Dentistry also usually involves a multitude of cases for which patients must be made to understand. To enable proper comprehension, this skill will serve me well.
My desire to work with like minded individuals will serve to steer me through this course. I look forward to studying, analyzing and improving my skills in dentistry. My desire to getting started in this profession will serve to help persevere tough times when I will be required to study long hours towards the acquisition of this skill. I have nothing in mind that will stand in my way now that I have conquered myself. During the years of my practice, I want to increase the number of smiles that decorate our streets.
