“Inception” is a heist thriller movie that was released in 2010. It was written by Christopher Nolan and coproduced by him and Emma Thomas. The starring crew includes Leonardo DiCaprio (Dominic Cobb), Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon Levitt (Arthur), Marion Cotillard (Mal, Dom’s wife) and Pete Postlethwaite (Maurice Fischer) among others. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the role of Dominic Cobb a fugitive and works as a thief who commits corporate espionage by infiltrating the minds of his targets and extracting information that may be used, especially, by the target’s competition. On one such jobs, he fails and the target opts to hire him to do the reverse action which is referred as inception or planting an idea into the mind of another target. In return, the target promises to take Cobb back to his real life which includes his two children. He recruits people to work with him. Only he knows the challenges ahead (Winchur, 44).
Cobb then recruits his team and gets to work. They need to plant the heir of a company that may be able to control the economy in the future with an idea. The idea is that he should dissolve the company. When the father of the heir dies, the heir takes him so as to bury him. Along the way, he is intercepted and sedated to sleep. Meanwhile, we come across the other actors, Dom’s longtime friend; Eames (Tom Hardy), the forger; Dom’s father-in-law (Michael Caine), who taught Dom the art of extraction but does not participate in the “Inception”, and Yusuf (Dileep Rao), the chemist.
The visual effects of the movie are very realistic. Although some effects are computer generated, every scene that is in the movie is either real or based on a rreal place. The movie reconstructs the dreams as blurry as they would be yet keeping its audience in touch. The soundtrack demonstrates the sadness that is in Cobb’s mind throughout the movie. The movie also contains tracks that are there just to make the idea of dreams sink such as dream within a dream and the dream is collapsing both of which were composed by hans Zimmer. The soundtrack’s foundation is however is Edith Piaf’s song, Non, je ne regrette rien. The was shot in at least six countries including morocco, France, Canada, United States, England and Japan.
The movie is no surprise for Christopher Nolan. He is also the writer of others of the same kind including Insomnia (2002), Batman Begins (2005) and the dark Knight (2008). The good reception of his movie the dark Knight may have contributed towards securing the funding for the $160million movie. The entire story therefore takes place in the minds of several characters as Cobb uses his method in weaving together their dreams so that they all tend towards the same direction.
The cast is well selected. The entire crew is able to deliver on the movie and give its audience the intended message. Also the way the crew is selected fits in well making every one of them compatible with their purpose.
The movie further however may not be everyone’s movie. It takes too long to unfold for those who like action movies. There is a big possibility of getting bored within the first 15 minutes and moving on. It also requires an active participation of the audience to enjoy the movie. It may also seem too complex for others. The idea is to watch through and wait for the movie to unfold. However, even some seasoned critics, understandably, have a hard time understanding the movie.
There is something else the movie lacks. It lacks content that can be pondered on later after viewing. It is the kind of movie one watches and forgets about almost immediately. It lacks a connection to real life situations. There is almost no way anyone we associate with the movie.
The movie is rated PG 13 and so parents should be cautious with it. Its main weaknesses in this regard would the use of drugs, violence which includes multiple explosions, sexual content and a bit of dirty language content.
The movie is, however, worth watching. It has been rated on different forums at 74%, 86% and 8.8/10 0n Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. The uniqueness of the movie most likely plays a part. Christopher Nolan sets his focus on incorporating action, violence and so much more in Science fiction. This takes him a step above other movies as far as creativity and uniqueness are concerned. In the end, the writer completely drives the idea home (Adams, par. 4).
All in all, the movie, though it contains a few weaknesses here and there, it has its own audience and has not had a bad reception. The movie is far above average, probably almost perfect. It has a way of getting the viewer absorbed in its contents and is a good watch.
