 Cancer Brochure: This is a list of information that you must include. 

 For this assignment you will also need to use and site a primary source/article. A primary peer-reviewed article is not a review article; it contains original research that has not been previously published. In order to find primary peer-reviewed articles you will need to use pubmed.gov or google scholar. Wiki-anything is not primary sources. In the Hallmarks of Cancer you will notice when they cite someone else’s work they end the sentence (Last name, Year of publication). Please do the same in this writing assignment and in your Cancer Brochure assignment.   

1. General symptoms/features of the cancer (pick one cancer)

2. The prevalence of the cancer type/subtype in the US: Include any differences between men and women and/or ethnicities. Are there any increased risks for developing this specific cancer (occupational, environmental, genetic, etc.). Is there a reliable screening for this cancer? At what stages do patients usually present or are diagnosed? What is the 5-year survival rate of diagnosed patients? 

3. Brief summary of current treatment options for the cancer type/subtype. What are 3 treatment options (in addition to debulking surgery, if that is an option, if it is not, state why surgery is not a viable option) for patients? If you cannot find 3 different options, state why. Go into detail on the therapeutic options, how does it “work” to kill the cancer? Briefly mention how therapeutic is administered, how much it cost to receive this therapeutic? 

4. Brief description of current research on the disease. A review article such as Nature Reviews Cancer would be a great place to start. 

5. List of foundations or other sources of information, government, non-profit organization, local or national.

 You can use one of Word’s brochure template or something similar to it. It does not have to be double spaced and you can select your own font type/size so long as it is easy to read. Remember you want people to read your cancer brochure so it should look appealing you can include images/graphs as well but cite your sources. It has to have accurate information. So make sure you are finding reliable sources and you are citing them correctly (Last name, Year of publication is one example if you want to use a number system you can do that as well). You need at least 3 references including at least one primary peer reviewed journal article. Find your references on pubmed or google scholar. Other places where information is usually accurate will include .org or .gov sites but you will need at least one primary reference. There is no limit to the number of references you can use. However please do not site blogs or secondary site information (i.e. yahoo news has a story on a new cancer treatment do not site that site) instead read the actual journal article that reports the information and site that. I say this for the reason that sometime people/companies publish articles for click bate and the information is not scientifically accurate.

 Remember paraphrase do not quote and DO NOT PLAGIARIZE! Double check for typos and syntax of your sentences. Make sure you have someone else proofread it before you submit it. 

DO NOT write in the first person! I understand that some of you may have selected a cancer that has played a role in a loved ones life please do not include that information here. At the end of the semester I would like to (with each of your permission) make all the brochures available to each of you. Therefore, I want to limit the amount of personal information that you may not be comfortable sharing. If you are comfortable with sharing that information than you may include it. In a corner of the brochure you may include your name and biol 316 if you want to. You do not need to include your name as I know which cancer brochure you have submitted when you submit it through Turnitin.com on cougar courses. 

Please keep this to less than two pages (similar to a double-sided brochure). You can use an additional page for your references if necessary.
