I consider the struggle between Ralph and Jack to represent the power struggle that is evident in the society today. Each character operates on different ideologies which finally leads to split of the group. The current society is characterized with struggles for power which has seen some nations engage in civil war as warring factions struggle to get at the hem of leader. Jack represents leaders in the society who are prepared to kill to gain leadership positions or extend their stay in power. I view Jack as the leaders who use all sorts of manipulation to assert control over their subjects. Jack uses deceit over other the boys to hunt for a beast that he clearly knows to be non-existence.

The boys represent a society that strives to makes rules for governance of the society. The boys at first had rules which were made in regular assemblies that were held. Among the rules of engagement was that the one using a conch not to speak without interruption. I consider this with the current set up in the society where parliaments are engaged in making rules and among the important rules of engagement is not to interrupt the first addressing the house. The boys are later seen breaking part of the rules that they set for themselves. The breaking of rules is a common trend in today’s society with different crimes being perpetuated by the society members.

Reflection 2

Among the key lessons that I have learnt from actions of the characters in the Lord of Flies in on leadership. I learnt the leadership lessons from the characteristics of Ralph and Jack. The two boys represent different leadership styles which leads to the antagonism between the two boys. From the analysis of the characters of the two boys, I learnt that leadership is not all about the physical strength but rather the leadership qualities. Ralph though not strong person demonstrates better leadership qualities. Ralph understood the needs of the group and was focused towards improving the conditions of the boys. Ralph treats all the boys with dignity and highlights the need treating everyone as equals. Life is progressive under the leadership of Ralph. Under the leadership of Jack, the group becomes uncivilized savages and portrays lack of discipline. Jack mistreats the weakest members of the group, piggy, which represents his unfair form of leadership. Jack treats other boys as inferiors and do not focus on the needs of his followers. I would emulate the leadership style adopted by Ralph as yields to stability in a group and treatment of followers with dignity.

Another key lesson that I learnt from the book is on conflicts. Conflict is represented in the book as a means of survival. the situation of the boys where the boys find themselves in the island is due to war as their plane is bombed. The boys find themselves stranded in an island with no adult supervision. Quest to acquire a leader is a major source of conflict. The presence of conflict in the community shapes the occurrence of events in the society. From this, I get to learn the conflict as a means of survival and can either lead to the worsening of the conditions of the community or the betterment of the situation.

Reflection 3

In my life, I have had to deal internal struggles of fear of failure. This was an internal struggle that I have had to deal with, just like the boys in the book, The Lord of Flies, who had to deal with fear of a beast that was lurking on the island. I remember in my younger days, I always held the idea that I need to perfect in everything that I did. I always felt the weight to succeed in everything that I engaged in such as examinations and sports. The effect of this was I became fearful and over-cautious and could not manage the bring the best out of me.

My parents were not making things better for me. They had set the bar of excellence so that high. This had caused pressure to build up in me. In classwork, I was an average student which was a no match to my siblings who excelled in their studies. It seemed that I was not good in enough in all I did. This made me develop some negative attitude towards studies and even sports which I had at some point enjoyed. The fear that I would lose and be branded as worthless.

I however overcame this fear, after an encounter with our school team coach. The coach had made some observations during my private session of how I good I was at the strokes but barely made it to cutline during team challenges. The coach assisted me to overcome my fears and build self-confidence. I made it a habit of giving my best in all endeavors and to not to worry about what others thought about me. I took this advice seriously and the results were all evident, my grades improved and I became more competitive in sports. My love for swimming was a great factor that helped me to overcome my fear that I had for long struggled with.
