Chapter 16 explores on internet, secondary analysis, and historical research. In the digital era, internet-based research has increased in popularity where more people use the Internet at home, school, work, or on their phones. Tappen argues that the application of online research platform will increase in the coming years. The internet helps the research process by easing the recruitment of participants, access to resources, data collection, and replaces paper and pencil surveys.
For example, while conducting a study, the researcher may recruit participants via the Internet. This is hastened by the use of Volunteer Standing Panels where members provide their socio-demographic characteristics through which one chooses the most appropriate representative sample. The chapter provides an example of an online survey that recruited participants from France, Great Britain, Canada, and the US to study smoking cessation. This example provides an advantage of online research in that it eliminates the aspect of the language barrier.
Chapter 17 discusses the aspect of intervention and one aspect that I will explore is selecting and training interventionists. While conducting a study, a researcher may not be in a position to provide the interventions which calls for the need to select the interventionists. Page 23 and 24 provide different characteristics to consider including dependability, knowledge and skills, objectivity and good judgment among the interventionists. After identifying the group, there is a need to train the interventionist depending on the complexity.
One example form of training provided in the text is the moderately complex training program that applied a “Standardized Psycho-education and Telephone Counseling Training Manual where the researcher trained the group before they worked with breast cancer patients. The training was conducted through discussions, simulation exercises, role-playing, didactic sessions, and assigned readings. The success of any intervention is attained through the formulation and application of a protocol.
