Living Wage Polarization

The number of people who can work and earn a decent living to fend for themselves is increasingly dependent on public assistance. The working poor is the majority of the people who receive public assistance. This means that they earn a wage that is less than sufficient to support their families. However, the model of funding for public assistance is restrictive. Insurance prevents people from working too hard because they are exposed to more health risks (YouTube). The wages they earn are barely enough to cover their living costs. The living wages remain unfair to the working poor because they can barely make ends meet and the working conditions make it difficult for them to cater to their needs effectively despite being ready to work and pay for their bills.

The Brexit movement and immigration anger stem from the fact that people in Europe would not gain access to Britain for work purposes unless they are skilled. This would mean that for the British nationals, they would have reduced opportunities to compete globally. Being out of the European Union means that the people from Britain would have to work harder to get opportunities outside of their country. The polarization of wealth and living wage is based on the fact that the poverty gap widens with time. The jobs that require high skills are few and the acquisition of the skills is minimal. At the same time, the jobs requiring low-level skills are many and the middle-level skilled workers are locked out of employment (Fitz). Effectively, it means that the people who can earn more money are stuck in the low wage group and as there are no middle-income jobs.
