Legalizing Prostitution

When a person hears about prostitution, they always think about infidelity and solicitation of sex. Prostitution and the debate about whether it should be legalized or not has existed for decades. The practice is complex, and it has been a topic of debate in many countries, including America. To a significant extent, the debates have always been in existence because prostitution is practiced all over the world, whether it is legal or illegal. It is thought to be one of the oldest “occupations”, since prostitution dates back to hundreds of years ago. Africa and Asia are some of the continents that prohibit prostitution in the harshest manner, but they are also the areas that practice it the most. Prostitution is illegal in America, except for some areas of the state of Nevada. Many individuals who are against prostitution associate the practice with the spread of sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV and AIDS, as well as sex slavery, child pornography and many other vices. However, there are a significant number of countries that have made steps of legalizing prostitution, by allowing it in form of exchange of money for sex. Some of the countries include Germany, Canada and New Zealand. A county like France allows for the practice of prostitution, as long as there are no brothels and “whore houses”. Therefore, prostitution should be legal because it will help reduce crimes like murder and rape, and it will provide jobs for individuals that need it, who will then contribute to the boosting of the economy of a county.

I believe that the only way to manage or regulate prostitution is by legalizing it. Prostitution is not a case of morality. In fact, prostitution should not be treated as a crime, but should be considered as a job opportunity for individuals who feel it is vital for them. According to Wright (2018), prostitution has always been considered illegal because of the notion that it is a crime, or an immorality of some sort. However I do not agree with the insinuation, especially since there seems to be a need for both physical and sexual satisfaction in the society dating centuries back. Human beings have always had a deficiency in sexual satisfaction, judging by the amount prostitution cases that have been reported over the years. Therefore, the sex industry should undergo a well-managed regulation, so that it get a proper reputation like all other occupations (Worstall, 2014). In support of what the author explains, the idea of legalizing and regulating prostitution will ensure that the relevant stake holders take control of the occupation, and know how to manage it. It is definite that prostitution is rampant today, and has always been rampant because there was and there is demand for the practice. If prostitution is not legalized and regulated, then the crimes that are related to the practice will continue to mad the waters of many countries. Women are the individuals that are targeted by groups that do not believe in prostitution. Therefore, there is need to protect such women who are discriminated against simply because they practice prostitution. Their right to live their life as they please should not be tampered with, and they should not be punished or harassed because they practice prostitution. When women are protected in the society, there is a feeling of hope and trust in the government by people who feel that the rights of each person should be respected.

Governments and citizens all together should stop approaching the issue of prostitution with so much emotion and deal with it in a logical manner. We have seen cases where politicians have come into the fight of making prostitution legal. The politicians use the issue of prostitution to gain political mileage, and it helps destroy the reputation of prostitution. Giving politicians the power to be sensitive and ignorant about issues concerning prostitution plays a significant role in spoiling for the win of legalization of the practice. However there is need for activists and all the progressive individuals who believe that prostitution should be legalized to speak about it openly and let all people understand why it is important to legalize it. Crepy (2017) asserts that prostitution exists in the society today, and it is time for individuals to start speaking about it openly, with no shame. When this happens, people will become more curious and might just change their perception of the practice. By talking about prostitution openly, chances of making it legal go higher. Sex, religion and other sensitive issues come up to set up a society, which is filled with individuals of unlike mind and thoughts. Therefore, legalizing prostitution is the first step to uniting individuals in the society (Trifiolis, 2014). Prostitution and its legalization is an issue of human rights, and that should be considered widely. A country like America which is progressive and keen on upholding the rights of human beings should lead in the fight of making prostitution a legal and legitimate practice. Nothing should be left to chance when it comes to the issue of prostitution, especially since it involves fighting for the rights of women and a significant number of men who find comfort and an occupation in prostitution.

Therefore, prostitution should be legal because it will help reduce crimes like murder and rape, and it will provide jobs for individuals that need it, who will then contribute to the boosting of the economy of a county. The world is run by certain unwritten laws that dictate that each individual has the right to make their own decision. It is also a law in almost all parts of the world, that each person has the right to make their own decisions, especially with their body. There is need for tolerance for individuals who decide to practice prostitution. No one has a right to tell another person how to live, or what to do with their life, since everyone has their life to live. Prostitution is such an issue of contention because individuals are afraid to think outside the box. People do not want to imagine what legalization of prostitution will do for the continent, yet the practice has a significant amount of positivity. The idea of decriminalizing prostitution will help in many ways, including the reduction of violence, and the increase of healthy sex workers. Issues of sexually transmitted diseases and cases of rape will not be heard because individuals who procure the services as well as those that provide them will take better care of their health. Hospitals will be at ease to provide medical attention to such people, which will ensure more health and thus a better workforce.
