Leadership and management is not the same thing but they complement each other. Managerial tasks mostly encompass planning, organizing, and coordination of organizations and firms. Leadership is more concerned with the motivation and inspiration of workers. Several theories are available to differentiate the approaches of leadership and management models. This paper sought to elaborate more on the servant leadership model by showing its most significant differences with other models. It also explains the paradox of servant leadership.
The Most Significant Differences between Servant Leadership Models and Other Models
One of the most significant differences between servant leadership model and other models is that in servant leadership, the boss stoops lower in terms of humility to levels that the workers can identify with him or her. In other models like authoritarian leadership, the workers are subjected to policies and procedures dictated to them by the boss without any participation of subordinates in making of the policies.
The Paradox of Servant Leadership
On its own, the statement ‘servant leadership’ is a paradox. These two words cancel out each other. A servant is associated with serving the leader who is thought to be the one in power. In the servant leadership model, the one in power is expected to show humility and a down to earth attitude that may be considered wimpy in modern society. This would ordinarily be expected of the servant.
Effective Leadership Representation in the Servant Leadership Model
Several qualities make up an effective leader. In my model, humility is a major linking factor of the leader to his subordinates. Understanding that workers play a key role in the implementation and making of policies and strategic ideas is a key quality required for effective leadership. The humility of the leader narrows down further to communication. Seamless communication between the leadership and the subordinates is an effective way of ensuring a flow of ideas and motivation throughout the organization.
