DACA Program

The policy in question relates to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. President Obama’s administration initiated the program in 2012. The objective of the policy was to grant temporary protection from deportation to young people who had been brought into the United States illegally while still children. Obama’s administration allowed them to go to school and secure employment provided they met some given criteria and passed a background check. The main issue in Court was the question as to whether relatives of foreign victims who are injured on foreign soil could present their cases to Court without express authorization from Congress.
As of June 2019, DACA had approximately 1,724,000 active participants from 30 different countries across the world. The individuals are distributed across the United States, with a majority of the participants based in California and Texas, with approximately 519,000 and 253,000, respectively. The District of Columbia and Delaware recorded the least number of DACA participants, with each having approximately 3,000 participants. A significant number of DACA recipients originate from Mexico, with a population of 529,760 individuals in the program. The second largest is El Salvador, with a population of approximately 25,350 people. Other countries with reasonable numbers of people in the DACA program include Guatemala, Honduras, and Peru with 17,260, 15,810, and 6,570 respectively to complete the top five list of countries whose citizens are recipients in the DACA program.
In 2017, President Trump’s administration decided to end the program. According to the United States attorney general, the program was illegal and unconstitutional since its initiation. I disagree with President Trump’s decision to end the program since the young people in the program were innocent when they came into the United States. Most of them came with their parents, which makes it unfair to punish children for the mistakes of the parents. Secondly, under President Obama’s administration, the children were allowed to go to school and get employed, which means they contribute to the Country’s economy. Ending the program will impact the Country negatively too.
From a liberal point of view, the program should continue as deporting the young people back to their countries of origin would drastically affect their lives yet bring insignificant benefits to the United States. Conversely, allowing them to stay would benefit not only the DACA participants but also the United States as the individuals are a source of labour to the Country’s economy. Besides, the young people came to America as children, and the Country could be the only home they know.
From a conservative point of view, the Obama administration made a mistake by allowing illegal immigrants to stay in the Country regardless of their age. If President Trump was to support the program because the previous administration allowed it even though it was wrong, it would be a perfect example of trying to combine two wrongs to make a right. Besides, the claim that DACA recipients benefit the United States economy by providing labour is not logical since native Americans are still suffering unemployment.
By ending the program, President Trump’s administration is conducting a social injustice by punishing innocent individuals for the mistakes of their parents. Besides, the administration should stop focusing on the mistakes that occurred decades ago when the individuals entered the United States, and start focusing on the worth of each person and what they offer to America.
