TITLE: Bittersweet: A Coming of Age Historical Romance
AUTHOR: Lloyd R. Free
PUBLISHER: Sugarhill Press
Lloyd R. Free first takes us to Northern California in 1960. The author paints san Fransico as vivacious, lovely, and full of life. Everything that happens in San Fransisco leaves the reader wanting to have a taste of the city in the 1960s. In the midst of ‘Bittersweet: A Coming of Age Historical Romance’ are two main characters; Max and Renny. The men are students at Berkely. Renny is the emotional, sweet and collected friend whose love life I enjoyed reading. Max is a little aggressive, unattached and fierce character who could care less about some things in life. I found his being uninterested in his mother’s affairs to be an eccentric trait. Max, however, made a matchless character.
Max and Renny live such interesting lives. Existing during the beatnik era in San Fransisco required one to understand the basics, live fully, experiment and be ready to be part of some of the vices in the city. Violent protests were a common thing, demonstrations which involved police and political disorder were part of life. San Franciscans loved entertainment too as people engaged in sex, drug use, partying and loved rock ‘n’ roll. The two men loved the city but all the Shenanigans San Fransisco presented had them move to France. Life in France was good. I love how Lloyd R. Free made the reader love the European nation. Everything about Dijon, Cassis, Paris and every other part of France the two went two was divine. The author knows how to make the reader feel present in the character’s lives.
Romance is one of the major themes covered in the book. Lloyd R. Free created a perfect love life with the characters. Renny’s romantic escapades were the most exciting. Max and Fiona made a beautiful couple despite the two having different perspectives on life. Renny and Anne-Marie were lovely too. Their relationship, however, seemed off even when the two appeared to be compatible. Renny seemed to be a hopeless romantic for a better part of the book. I love that the author created this character as it broke the monotony of how romance stories are perceived in the mainstream world. Some chapters will take you aback as the author was not conventional when writing the love stories. Most of the traits that made the characters were extraordinary.
Prepare yourself for a stimulating ride once you get hold of ‘Bittersweet: A Coming of Age Historical Romance’. The historical references, the drama, humor, use of literature stylistic devices, twists and turns and the amazing plot will have you hooked from the start. Lloyd R. Free wrote a fantastic novel that has bittersweet moments that will make you emotional, and amusing love stories that will make you want to read more. The ending felt a little abrupt as there are scenes which left me with a major cliffhanger. The development of the story is commendable as every character made the story great. I recommend this book to romance fanatics who want to see a different side of romance novels. I rate this book with 4 out of 5 stars because ever y chapter was thrilling.
